Boehner Undergoes 'Minor' Back Procedure

By    |   Wednesday, 30 April 2014 04:48 PM EDT

House Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday had a "minor, unscheduled medical procedure related to recurring back problems," spokesman Michael Steel told Newsmax.

While declining to be more specific, Steel confirmed that Boehner did not attend a scheduled Holocaust remembrance ceremony at the Capitol where legislators dedicated a tree in honor of Anne Frank.

A former high school football player, Boehner, 64, is known for being active, Politico reports.

He is an avid golfer — once playing 18 holes with President Barack Obama in 2011 — and he often bicycles around Washington with his security detail.

Boehner's back problems date to when he worked in his family's bar back in Ohio. He had surgery at the Cleveland Clinic about five years ago, The Hill reports.
