Trump Promises There Will Be No 'Female Socialist President'

President Donald Trump railed against the United States having a "female socialist president," taking an apparent hit against Democrat vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif.

"We're not going to be a socialist nation," Trump said told a campaign rally Friday at The Villages, Florida. "We're not going to have a socialist president, especially a female socialist president. We're not going to have it. We're not going to put up with it."

Republicans are pushing an anti-socialism message in Florida in hopes of attracting votes from Hispanic immigrants who have fled socialist dictatorships in places such as Venezuela. Trump has repeatedly attacked Harris, D-Calif., because of positions she took while she was running for the presidency earlier this year.

Trump's comments will likely be praised by his base, but it risks alienating some female voters while his campaign is seeking support among women, especially in the suburbs.

The president is trailing Democrat nominee Joe Biden by double digits both nationally and in key states, even though he says he has done "more for women than just about any president in history."

Thursday, a Quinnipiac University poll showed Biden ahead of Trump by 60% to 34%, and a Washington Post-ABC poll in August had Biden winning in the suburbs by 8 points and among suburban women by 13 points.

Trump won suburban votes by 4 points in 2016 against Hillary Clinton. He is trying to swing the suburban women's vote his way by pushing a law and order message after this year's nationwide protests over racism and police brutality, and by stressing his repeal of an Obama-era regulation to allow more low-income housing in suburbs.
