A Social Security Administration worker in Illinois refused on several occasions to watch a 17-minute workplace training video about gay, transgender, and bisexual diversity because of his Christian beliefs, The Washington Post reports.

David Hall works in information technology at the Champaign office. He was told
to watch the video and declined on two occasions in June, and was reprimanded. He was suspended for two days in August without pay.

"If I have to choose between almighty God, and Social Security, and the federal government, believe you me, Jesus Christ wins out," Hall said in an interview on WCIA TV.

Hall was told to certify that he had seen the video. "I'm not going to certify sin. I'm not going to certify an abomination," he said.

His complaint about the video is that watching it is mandatory, telling WCIA that "we have never done that for another particular class of people. This is the only group of individuals that we've done it for. We haven't done it for veterans, the disabled, blacks, Hispanics, or anything else."

The video, Hall continued, is not a training video, but "it's promoting an agenda and a lifestyle that I simply don't agree with."

When asked how he knows that if he has not watched the video, Hall responded, "How do you know that it's not, that it's prompting awareness? I don' t need to certify to be culturally aware. I treat a human being the same way I would want to be treated."

President of Champaign County's UP Center Stephanie Skora, an LGBT services agency, said that based on that comment, Hall shouldn't have any trouble watching the video, because he would still treat people the same as he did before seeing it.

WCIA reported that Hall has hired attorney Jason Craddock, who represented Timber Creek Bed and Breakfast owner Jim Walder, who refused to host a same-sex ceremony on the bed and breakfast's grounds in 2011.

Hall said he has LGBT friends and family members, and supports their right to disagree with him on the issue, saying, "I have no animosity towards anyone."

The Chicago-area Social Security office explained the training to the Illinois station in a statement:

"In support of an inclusive work environment, as well as exemplary customer service, the Social Security Administration recently announced a diversity and inclusion training on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Community to our employees. The training includes a brief session on tips for increasing cultural awareness in a diverse and inclusive environment."
