The Federal Election Commission said Thursday lawmakers can use campaign money on home security in the wake of a shooting attack at a congressional baseball practice.

The Wall Street Journal reported the FEC approved a legal opinion that said the donations given to politicians can go to security systems for their homes.

Last month, a gunman targeting Republicans showed up at a baseball practice and began shooting, injuring four people before he was shot and killed by police. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., was shot in the hip and remains hospitalized.

In 2011, now former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., survived an assassination attempt in her home state of Arizona.

Both shootings occurred in public places, not at lawmakers' private residences.

There has been an increase in threats made to politicians in Washington, D.C. this year, causing many to wonder whether all elected officials should have some type of security.

In the Scalise shooting, two U.S. Capitol Police officers were on hand because Scalise is a member of the leadership team.
