The Securities and Exchange Commission has directed some employees to work from home due to fears of a potential coronavirus case, reports The Washington Post.
"Out of an abundance of caution, effective immediately, the SEC is requiring all Headquarters personnel (employees and contractors) who work on the 9th floor to telework," read the email to SEC employees sent Monday.
The email said an employee was treated for respiratory symptoms early Monday and was told by a physician the person could have contracted the coronavirus.
"To the best of our knowledge, the employee remained asymptomatic during the employee's time in the building," the email read.
The SEC in an email to the Post confirmed the announcement.
"Even with increased telework, the SEC remains able and committed to fully executing its mission on behalf of investors, including monitoring market function and working closely with other regulators and market participants," the statement said.
Globally, more than 100,000 people have been infected by the coronavirus and more than 4,000 people have died in an epidemic that began in Wuhan, China.
The number of known cases in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia climbed to 14 on Monday.
