Same-sex marriage and assault weapons legislation in Illinois is on hold after senators left the State Capitol Thursday without voting on either controversial measure.
The marriage bill advanced through committee on Thursday, the
Chicago Tribune reports, but its sponsor, Democratic Sen. Heather Stearns, said she didn't have enough senators available on Thursday to push it to a winning vote on the Senate floor.
The gay marriage bill had faced significant opposition from the Catholic Conference of Illinois and Cardinal Francis George.
Meanwhile, supporters of an assault weapons ban dropped their efforts to push the measure to a vote, despite the support of Chicago Mayor Raum Emanuel. Opponents described the ban as too broad and unworkable.
