Sailor Shot after Car Chase at San Diego Navy Base

Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:56 PM EST

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Military officials say Navy police shot and injured one sailor and took another into custody following a car chase at Naval Base San Diego.

Navy spokesman Jason Salata says the two sailors were stopped at a base gate early Saturday on suspicion of drunken driving.

The sailors fled to another gate, where their vehicle smashed into two police cars.

Salata says police then shot at the vehicle, hitting one of the sailors.

KNSD-TV reports the shot sailor is hospitalized in stable condition.

The other sailor was not hurt and was taken into custody. No charges have been filed.

The sailors' names have not been released.
