Rudy Giuliani says President Donald Trump's lawyers reached out to special counsel Robert Mueller's office after BuzzFeed News claimed the president told Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about a Moscow tower project.
According to CNN, the president's lawyer would not provide any further details about the contact. Last Friday, Mueller's spokesman Peter Carr issued a rare statement rejecting the bombshell post.
It is not clear which parts of the story Mueller's office found inaccurate; BuzzFeed said it stands by its reporting.
Also on Monday, Giuliani told the New York Daily News he had confirmed with previous members of Trump's legal team — including ex-lead counsel John Dowd — that Trump did not talk to Cohen before his September 2017 Capitol Hill testimony.
"The president never spoke with Cohen about the congressional testimony," Giuliani told the Daily News.
Giuliani did acknowledge Trump's then-legal team talked with Cohen's lawyers — and possibly Cohen himself — before he went before the House and Senate intelligence committees – when he lied about the Trump Tower Moscow talks having ended January 2016.
"Anything that happened between the lawyers would have been part of the joint defense agreement," Giuliani told Daily News, claiming all parties involved believed Cohen's planned testimony was truthful.
Dowd echoed Giuliani's assertion Monday, texting Daily News that Trump never spoke directly with Cohen before his testimony.
