Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said Americans should expect coronavirus restrictions to ease at some point, but cautioned that infections and deaths will continue until there is a vaccine.

Rubio made his remarks in a video he tweeted on Wednesday.

“No one can tell you for certain when all of this is going to end,” he said. “But here are some fundamental truths that people need to hear, and they need to start hearing now.”

Rubio said that until there is a vaccine, the infection and death rates are “never going to be zero.”

And he added that “any opening that we make that allow people to come in contact with more people is going to increase the number of infections, is going to increase the number of deaths.”

But Rubio warned that “we cannot keep the country in this condition for six months, for nine months, for a year, until we have a vaccine.”

He said: “The big picture in all this is that at some point, in the near future, there are going to have to be changes to the current restrictions. They are just not sustainable in the long-term. And when those changes come, no matter how careful they are in making them there are going to be increases in the number of infections. There are going to be increases in the number of deaths."

Rubio also had insisted this week that a major lesson of the coronavirus crisis is that the U.S. must halt its dependence on China for medical supplies and return drug manufacturing back home.
