Romney Trails Obama in Battleground States on Medicare Issue

Friday, 21 September 2012 10:13 AM EDT

President Barack Obama is leading Republican challenger Mitt Romney in a poll of 12 battleground states on the question of who is trusted more on the issue of Medicare, USA Today reported.

Voters, 50 percent to 44 percent, say they trust more in Obama than Romney on Medicare and 53 percent are pessimistic that Medicare will still be providing all Americans over 65 with adequate health care coverage 20 years from now, according to the USA Today/Gallup poll.

Voters in the poll also said that Obama has put forward a specific plan for Medicare, 51 percent to 46 percent, while they don’t think Romney has done so, 50 percent to 44 percent.

Republican pollster David Winston told USA Today that Republicans are closing what has traditionally been a large gap with Democrats on health care issues including Medicare.

“Now we’re still behind but six points is significantly better than being minus 25,” he told the paper. “That's an improvement. . . .The country is still waiting for somebody to come up with a solution that will work. That will end up making it a draw — which for Republicans is a good outcome.”
