Most Americans don't think illegal immigrant children ought to be allowed to attend local schools, a new poll released Thursday shows.
The
Rasmussen Reports telephone survey found just 32 percent of voters think children in the United States illegally should be signed up for public schools this fall — but 53 percent disagreed. Fourteen percent were undecided.
The margin of error was 3 percentage points.
Despite the resistance of voters, a
Department of Education memo points out every child in the United States — regardless of legal status — is "entitled to equal access to a public elementary and secondary education," including those children who were part of a surge of immigrants from Central America who have poured across the nation's southern border.
About 63,000 unaccompanied minors and some 62,800 families have been picked up after entering the United States illegally,
Breitbart reports.
About 37,000 of the unaccompanied
children have been released to sponsors throughout the country, and some school districts are gearing up for the influx, including those in Texas, where more than 5,000 illegal migrant pupils will be showing up for school, as well as New York and California, where each expect roughly 4,000 arrivals.
