Rangel: Americans Will Suffer If Debt Ceiling not Raised

Americans with "skin in the game" will suffer if House Republicans don't allow for the nation's debt ceiling to be raised, says Rep. Charles Rangel, a New York Democrat.

"If we don’t get the debt-ceiling increase, and if this country goes into default, those Americans who have skin in the game are really going to suffer," Rangel said Sunday on "The Cats Roundtable" on AM 970 in New York.

Story continues below.

With the Nov. 3 deadline fast approaching, Republicans don't have the votes in the House to raise the debt ceiling, threatening the first-ever government default.

"You don’t play with the economy of the United States of America," Rangel said.

Rep. Paul Ryan, widely expected to take the reins of House speaker from the retiring Rep. John Boehner, has his hands full, Rangel told host John Catsimatidis.

"Ryan has said … 'I feel an obligation to my country and my party to serve. All I’m asking is that members of my party don’t stab me in the back politically and try to close the government down on me,'" Rangel said, adding, "so far they haven’t fulfilled the request that he’s asked for."
