Teachers Union Funding Tied to Anti-ICE School Protests

A group backed by the nation's largest teachers union is reportedly preparing activists for a series of anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement protests planned for May 1, including demonstrations expected to take place outside public schools.

According to a report Thursday in the Washington Examiner, organizers behind the anti-Trump "No Kings" demonstrations are planning nationwide follow-up protests on that date. Some events are expected to be held near educational institutions, based on materials circulated by activists.

Midwest Academy, a Chicago-based advocacy group that provides training for progressive organizers, is involved in preparing activists to engage with "parents, educators, and students," ahead of the protests, the Examiner reported.

Financial disclosures indicate the National Education Association has provided roughly $1.4 million to the group since 2020.

Promotional materials tied to the demonstrations call for "no work, no school, [and] no shopping" on May 1.

Organizers are also promoting "walk-ins," which involve rallies outside schools lasting roughly 30 to 45 minutes before participants enter school grounds together.

Materials reviewed by the Examiner do not specify whether demonstrations are intended to continue on campus.
