Having been stymied by Congress' inability to pass healthcare legislation that would have cut off funding to Planned Parenthood, the impatient pro-life lobby is now urging Republicans to cut the abortion provider out of the 2018 budget.
The head of Susan B. Anthony List on Tuesday called it "completely unacceptable" that Planned Parenthood is still being funded by all-Republican leadership in Washington in the wake of the Senate's failure to even get a vote on Graham-Cassidy.
"The failure to pass this reconciliation bill means abortion giant Planned Parenthood remains funded by the taxpayers under a Republican Congress and president," said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. "This is completely unacceptable.
"We call on Congress and the president to include the urgent priority of re-directing Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding to comprehensive healthcare providers in the FY18 reconciliation bill.
"We are grateful to Senators Graham, Cassidy, Heller, and Johnson for putting forward a strong pro-life healthcare reform bill that deserved the support of every pro-life Senator," Dannenfelser wrote.
Dannenfelser's impatience with Republicans came a day after she and 75 other pro-life groups signed a letter to them stating it was "well past time to deliver on that promise" of defunding Planned Parenthood.
"We urge you to revisit the FY2017 reconciliation bill immediately and find consensus on a bill that takes Planned Parenthood off the federal Medicaid dole," they wrote.
"Whether that is a broad pro-life healthcare reform package or a narrower bill is up to the Congress to determine, but giving up is not why the voters sent pro-life Republicans to Congress. Should robust efforts on the FY2017 reconciliation bill run out of time, then the fight to defund Planned Parenthood must move immediately to the FY2018 reconciliation bill," the groups wrote.
