PPP: Trump Remains Unpopular Among Voters

Donald Trump is gaining popularity, but a majority of Americans still have a negative view of the president-elect, according to the latest Public Policy Polling survey. 

The results:

  • Trump Favorable: 43 percent.
  • Trump Unfavorable: 51 percent.

Trump gained 4 points since late September, the last national poll conducted by PPP:

  • Trump Favorable: 39 percent.
  • Trump Unfavorable: 55 percent.

"Donald Trump might have won the election, but that hasn't changed the basic parameters of voters' feelings toward him," said Dean Denham, president of Public Policy Polling.

President Barack Obama comes in as more popular in the poll:

  • Obama favorable: 50 percent.
  • Unfavorable: 45 percent.

When asked who voters trusted more to choose the next Supreme Court justice, Obama fared better than Trump:

  • Obama: 52 percent.
  • Trump: 45 percent.

As for Trump's win in the Electoral College while losing the popular vote to Hillary Clinton, many favor the popular vote:

  • Whoever wins popular vote should be president: 50 percent.
  • Disagree about winning popular vote: 37 percent.

Majority of Trump supporters believe statements that cast doubt on the vote:

  • Trump voters who think Clinton got millions of illegal votes: 60 percent.
  • Trump voters who disagree: 18 percent.
  • Not sure: 22 percent.

Out of all Trump voters, many believe he won the popular vote:

  • Trump won popular vote: 40 percent.
  • Admit that Clinton won it: 49 percent.
  • Not sure: 11 percent.
     

According to a Bloomberg poll, Trump is gaining popularity, with 55 percent of voters optimistic about the president-elect's actions and statements since he won the presidency.

Public Policy Polling surveyed 1,224 registered voters on Dec. 6 and 7. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
