Despite President Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans' calls to repeal the Affordable Care Act, a new Politico/Morning Consult poll shows the health care law is becoming more popular among the public.
Voters are now evenly split on Obamacare, with positive ratings up since early January, according to a poll conducted prior to Trump's inauguration.
- February poll: 45 percent approve, 45 percent disapprove.
- January poll: 41 percent approved, 52 percent disapproved.
"As the threat of the Affordable Care Act's repeal has moved from notional to concrete, our weekly polling has shown an uptick in the law's popularity, and fewer voters support repealing the law," said Kyle Dropp, Morning Consult co-founder and chief research officer, in Politico.
- 12 percent want to keep the law.
- 24 percent want it repealed entirely.
- 27 percent want parts repealed.
- 26 percent want to expand the law.
Trump's maintains a solid backing from Republicans, though.
"Trump has strong support from within his party: 85 percent of Republicans approve of the job he's doing," Dropp added. "But that doesn't mean they're ready to give him carte blanche. Even four in 10 Republicans say congressional Republicans should serve as a check on Trump."
Although Republicans campaigned on repealing and replacing Obamacare, they have yet to settle on a plan. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said on Fox News last week that he would release a replacement plan "in the next month or two."
Morning Consult surveyed 2,013 registered voters, and the poll has a margin of error of +/- 2 percentage points.
