Already reeling from an undercover video sting, Planned Parenthood now faces a budget crisis as the House moves to deny the pro-abortion group all its customary federal funding,
The New York Times reports. Contained in a 2011 spending bill that eliminates family planning services is an amendment that strips Planned Parenthood of $75 million in annual support.
The 95-year-old organization is pinning its hopes on the Senate, where a Democratic majority will likely restore some funding. It’s unclear how much money will make it through House-Senate negotiations and into the final legislation Congress sends to the White House for the president’s signature.
Meanwhile, the Times reports that more House legislation targeting Planned Parenthood “is in the offing, putting the organization in its most precarious political spot in decades.”
Some of the backlash is being fueled by videos in which Planned Parenthood clinic employees freely give sexual health advice to a man posing as a pimp. The clips, shot surreptitiously and then released by a pro-life organization, Live Action, have spurred debate over something Planned Parenthood had long taken as a given: access to federal dollars
