Florida politicians fear new legislation could turn their town into one giant, smelly, pigsty.
The city of Marathon, located in the Florida Keys, recently approved a law that allows residents to keep domestic pigs as pets.
But council members Dick Ramsay and Chris Bull believe that as written now, it could possibly lead to big problems for the community of 8,200 residents.
“The way I read it was wide open so people could have a pig-raising business and you could have 500-pound pigs,’’ Bull told the
Miami Herald.
He added that the law doesn’t address piglets, which could be swine population nightmare as pigs can produce between eight to 12 piglets at a time — at least twice annually.
That means if just 100 residents were to adopt pigs as pets, those animals could potentially multiply into 2,400 pigs in a single year.
Ramsay said some residents feel “the whole ordinance was ridiculous and we shouldn't be allowing pigs within the city limits.’’
He said he will request the City Council reopen the ordinance for amendments at its Tuesday meeting.
Pet pigs have become quite popular with different varieties such as pot-bellied pigs and teacup pigs.
