NEWARK, N.J. — Paroled American Lori Berenson, who stirred international controversy when she was convicted of aiding Peruvian guerrillas, has arrived in the United States for her first visit home since Peruvian authorities arrested her in 1995.
Peruvian officials gave her permission to leave the country with her toddler son to spend the holidays with her family in New York City.
Berenson's plane touched down at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on Tuesday morning.
Authorities in Peru barred her from boarding a Friday night flight to New York with her 2-year-old son despite a court's approval, saying she needed an additional document.
When she was paroled last year, Berenson had served three-quarters of a 20-year prison term for aiding the rebels.
