1,364 Pa. Bridges Face Weight Limits Unless Repaired

By    |   Friday, 07 June 2013 03:19 PM EDT

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says a whopping 1,364 bridges throughout the Keystone State are in such ill-repair, they may soon need to adopt strict weight restrictions.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the bridges named in a state DOT report are in need of repair, rehabilitation, or complete replacement.

The cost of overhauling the bridges won't be cheap -- and the DOT doesn't have the funds to pay for it anyway.

For example, fixing the 2,700-foot-long Liberty Bridge that crosses the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh will run from $40 million to $60 million.

According to the Post Gazette, Republican Gov. Tom Corbett has proposed raising up to $1.8 billion in new annual revenue to help with bridge repair by upping the state tax on gasoline at the wholesale level.

Currently, wholesalers pay state tax on only $1.25 per gallon of the full price. Corbett's proposal would apply the tariff to the full wholesale price.
