President Donald Trump has not consulted with his predecessors about the coronavirus outbreak, telling reporters on Sunday that he wouldn’t “learn much” from them if he did, according to Politico.
A reporter asked Trump during the White House coronavirus task force press briefing on Sunday if he would contact any of former presidents for advice or help dealing with the crisis.
“I think we're doing an incredible job. So I don't want to disturb them, bother them,” Trump said. “I don't think I'm going to learn much and, you know, I guess you could say that there's probably a natural inclination not to call.”
He added later that if he thought that doing so could save a life, he’d “make the call in two minutes,” but said, “I don’t see that happening.”
Politico notes that presidents have regularly contacted their predecessors for advice or assistance during times of crisis, and that after Hurricane Katrina, former President George W. Bush contacted former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush to help raise voluntary contributions for relief efforts.
