Website Helps New Orleans Residents Monitor Their Government

Wednesday, 26 October 2011 04:00 PM EDT

New Orleans residents have a new tool to help them keep tabs on their local government: a website that provides information on more than 150 boards, commissions, and other public entities.

Two Tulane University professors — David Marcello, executive director of the Public Law Center at Tulane Law School, and political science professor Aaron Schneider — launched the site, Called New Orleans Satellite Government. nolasatellitegovernment.tulane.edu/

The site includes information about the agencies’ origins, boards, and finances.

"These satellite government entities perform important public functions in New Orleans, and there is a need for transparency and information about who they are, what they do, how they do it, and with what mechanisms of oversight," Marcello and Schneider said in a statement to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
