The Conservative Treehouse website is alleging CNN altered a selfie of Oregon shooter Chris Harper-Mercer to make him look white.
According to the website, a selfie the shooter posted to social media is different than one broadcast by CNN.
The Daily Kos has reported Mercer identified as "mixed-race," with a black mother and white father.
"On the left is the selfie Christopher Mercer uploaded to his social media,” the Conservative Treehouse reports, posting the selfie. "On the right is how CNN presented the same selfie in broadcast stories about him. Why did CNN need to change the complexion (color) of their broadcast?"
Another conservative website,
Info Wars, reasons "the race of Mercer does not fit the narrative that only white males — and thus white supremacist — can be mass shooters."
CNN media correspondent Brian Stetler, however, denied the altered photo allegation, tweeting:
GatewayPundit.com first reported CNN's tweeted denial.
The Los Angeles Times has reported investigators uncovered writings Mercer left behind that indicated he was a white supremacist, but
Front Page magazine writer Daniel Greenfield writes about the incongruity.
"[I]t's not impossible for a half-black man to be into Nazi gear and IRA posters and just about anything he likes," Greenfield writes.
"There were plenty of black soldiers fighting for Hitler. But it's disingenuous to pretend that he's the poster boy for a movement whose members wouldn't have him.
