COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The co-founder of an Ohio tea party coalition says it's pushing for a state constitutional amendment to prevent workers covered by union contracts from being required to join unions or pay dues.
The move by members of the Ohio Liberty Council comes two days after voters defeated a state law curbing collective bargaining rights for public workers. Labor groups and opponents poured more than $24 million into the campaign to reject the law.
More than 61 percent voted against the law on Tuesday, marking one of the biggest victories in decades for the labor movement.
Ohio Liberty Council co-founder Chris Littleton said Thursday the "right to work" amendment is about freedom of choice in the workplace, not collective bargaining. The group hopes to get the amendment on the 2012 ballot.
