As the Occupy Wall Street movement takes root in cities around the country, protesters in Boston are starting to find it's getting chilly out there. So they're taking some advice from the experts at living outside in cold weather: the homeless.
Homeless people have been telling protest organizers to stuff their clothes with "hay and straw," organizer Kristopher Eric Martin told
the Boston Herald.
"These guys are experts at staying warm and staying dry," Martin said. "All these guys are used to living on the streets and sleeping with one eye open."
The protesters have been camping out in the city's Dewey Square, and Mayor Thomas Menino says they can stay there as long as there isn't trouble.
"The protesters may remain, but we would advise them to not stay outside as weather gets cold and make sure they are aware of the dangers of the elements," Menino spokeswoman Dot Joyce told the Herald. "We will not force them to leave as long as they are not jeopardizing the public safety of those around them."
The demonstrators cannot have open fires or kerosene heaters for safety reasons, a Boston Fire Department spokesman said.
