Obama Promotes Plan for Near-Universal Wireless

Thursday, 10 February 2011 02:44 PM EST

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) — President Barack Obama says tomorrow's economy can't thrive on yesterday's infrastructure and that it's time for virtually every corner of the country to have high-speed Internet access.

Obama visited Marquette, Mich., a university town of 20,000 overlooking Lake Superior on Thursday. He saw high-tech wireless initiatives at Northern Michigan University and promoted his plan to bring high-speed wireless to 98 percent of the U.S. within five years.

He says one-third of U.S. homes currently don't have access to this technology that can spark new innovation, investments and jobs.

Obama often says the U.S. has to "out-innovate, out-educate and out-build" the rest of the world if it wants to lure new industries and jobs. He added a fourth step Thursday. Obama said the U.S. has to "out-hustle" competing nations, too.
