President Barack Obama is nominating the second-in-command at the U.S. Coast Guard to run the Transportation Security Administration.
The White House says Vice Adm. Peter Neffenger is Obama's pick to run the TSA and serve as assistant secretary for the Homeland Security Department.
Neffenger has served as the Coast Guard's vice commandant since 2014. He's a veteran Coast Guard member who once oversaw port security in Los Angeles and elsewhere in California.
Obama says in a statement that Neffenger will use his decades of Coast Guard experience and record of leadership dealing with important national challenges to strengthen transportation security.
If confirmed by the Senate, Neffenger would replace former TSA chief John Pistole. He announced his retirement last year after 4 ½ turbulent years leading the agency.
