Obama Treats South Korean President to Dinner

Wednesday, 12 October 2011 09:25 PM EDT

VIENNA, Va. — President Barack Obama answered the "what's for dinner" question with Korean food — and took South Korea's president with him.

Lee Myung-bak (lee myuhng bahk) is in the U.S. for a state visit that officially begins Thursday. But on the eve of that occasion, the two leaders enjoyed a private dinner at an upscale Korean restaurant in the Tyson's Corner area of northern Virginia.

The White House says the gesture was Obama's way of highlighting their good relations. The two leaders hit if off when Obama visited South Korea in 2009. They've also been allies on a number of key issues.

When Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, a close U.S. ally visited last June, Obama treated her to a gourmet meal at 1789 Restaurant in Washington's historic Georgetown neighborhood.
