President Obama Signs to Deaf Student

Thursday, 22 March 2012 10:02 AM EDT

President Barack Obama surprised and delighted a deaf student by responding to a comment in sign language. Stephon Williams, a Prince George’s Community College student, was at a Maryland event when he caught the president’s eye, The Washington Post reported.

Williams signed “I am proud of you,” to the president and Obama replied in sign language, “Thank you.” Obama’s Twitter account shared the moment on its feed Tuesday, according to the Post.

In a video made after the event, Williams says in sign language, “It was like he was waiting for me to say something. He understood me after I said I was proud of him. It was so amazing,” the Post reported.
