Mayor: Obama Will be in NYC for 9/11 Anniversary

Tuesday, 03 May 2011 08:00 PM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg says President Barack Obama will commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York City.

Bloomberg said Tuesday that he thinks it's "terribly important" for Obama to come to the city this Sept. 11. The mayor says the president's staff told him that Obama would be at ground zero on the anniversary.

A spokesman at the White House would not confirm the mayor's comments Tuesday.

Obama is traveling to New York on Thursday to visit the attack site and meet with families of Sept. 11 victims, days after U.S. forces killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

The memorial to the 2001 attacks is opening at ground zero on the 10th anniversary.
