Mexican Agents Stage Drug Raids on U.S. Soil

Monday, 29 August 2011 10:55 AM EDT

The Obama administration is allowing Mexican police to conduct drug raids from inside U.S. borders, reports Business Insider.

Mexican agents now can travel secretly to the United States to launch so-called “boomerang missions” against suspected drug traffickers to take them back across the border. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration supports the missions, Business Insider reported.

Both the United States and Mexico reportedly hope that working together to stage these raid operations will avoid the cartel corruption associated with the Mexican military. And the logistics of the program allow raids to occur while skirting the international conflict that could result from U.S. agents operating on Mexican territory, according to the Business Insider report.

This new mission program is part of the Obama administration’s attempt to crack down on violent drug cartels near the Mexican border. The administration hopes to break up transnational organized crime networks with methods somewhat similar to those U.S. intelligence agencies used to break up the Taliban and al-Qaida.
