Silicon Valley's Excitement Over Obama Dims

Friday, 19 August 2011 12:55 PM EDT

Silicon Valley represented a strong area of support for President Barack Obama in the 2008 election, supplying him with plenty of votes and cash. But things are looking a little different this time around, Politico reports.

The techies wonder why Obama hasn’t given them much more than photo opportunities. “I don’t think they feel the love,” Gary Shapiro, chief executive of the Consumer Electronics Association, told the news service. “There’s great disillusionment.”

Technology titans are skeptical that Obama will live up to the promises he made to them for science, education and technology reforms. The president’s proposed budget did include increased funding for science and research programs and a permanent extension of the research-and-development tax credit.

But with the budget process now turning over to the bipartisan supercommittee, techies feel no confidence these proposals will turn into law.
