Dean Baquet, the new executive editor of the New York Times, is recovering from surgery to remove a malignant tumor from his kidney, according to The Huffington Post.

He sent an email to staffers on Monday, saying that doctors found the tumor last week and told him it needed "immediate attention."

Baquet, who was promoted from managing editor after Jill Abramson was fired by publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. last month, told the newsroom that he would be back "as soon as possible" and that he’d been given an "excellent prognosis" by his doctors.

"Some of you may have noticed, I've been out of the office for the past few days," Baquet wrote in the email. "On Thursday, doctors found a malignant tumor on my kidney. I had minimally invasive, completely successful surgery on Saturday." He said he would be away from the office "for about a week."

Sulzberger told the employees that Abramson, the first woman to be the top editor of the Times, was leaving after three years due to "an issue with management in the newsroom," adding that there were no editorial issues during her tenure that caused the move.
