Poll: NYC Voters Approve of NYPD's Job Performance

Tuesday, 13 March 2012 06:45 AM EDT

A new poll says more than 80 percent of city voters think the New York Police Department fights against terrorism effectively and a majority of voters say the police act appropriately with Muslims.

The Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday says 82 percent of respondents thought the NYPD has been effective in combatting terrorism. When asked if the police acted appropriately or unfairly targeted Muslims, 58 percent said the NYPD was appropriate.

The poll comes after stories by The Associated Press about the NYPD's surveillance of Muslims after the Sept. 11 attacks. The tactics have stirred debate over whether the NYPD is trampling on civil rights and illegally profiling communities.

Quinnipiac polled 964 New York City voters from March 6-11. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
