By    |   Thursday, 01 November 2012 05:49 PM EDT

New York City residents — powerless, homeless, and hungry since Superstorm Sandy struck on Monday — began diving in dumpsters for food on the city’s Lower East Side and East Village on Thursday.

Much of the spoiled food had been discarded by the grocery store, and local restaurants also have trashed food that had been destroyed by the superstorm.

The area is not expected to have power restored before Saturday.
