NFL Recommends Stadium Pat-Downs

Friday, 16 September 2011 12:19 PM EDT

The NFL has recommended that all 32 teams impose new security screening procedures that may make fans feel they are at an airport instead of a football stadium.

The league wants all fans frisked from the waist up and the knees down. In the past pat-downs were only from the waist up, USA Today reported.

The searches for alcohol, weapons or other banned items could mean longer lines for the 16.6 million fans attending games and concerns about privacy.
"The enhanced security procedures recommended by our office before the start of the season will further increase the safety of fans but will require some additional time,"  NFL Spokesman Brian McCarthy told USA Today.
"We encourage fans to come early, enjoy their tailgating tradition, and be patient as they enter the stadium."

Last week, a man brought a stun gun to a New York Jets-Dallas Cowboys game and used it on other fans.
