NFL Suspends Saints Coach Payton for Year Over 'Bounties' on Opponents

Wednesday, 21 March 2012 01:14 PM EDT

The NFL has suspended New Orleans Saints' Super Bowl winning head coach Sean Payton for a year without pay after an investigation into "bounty" schemes that rewarded players for hurting opponents.

Former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams also was suspended indefinitely, and the team was fined $500,000.

In addition, the team will forfeit its selections in the second round of the 2012 and 2013 NFL drafts, the league said in a statement.
