Fans at NFL games will be required to wear face coverings this season, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy tweeted early Wednesday.
The mandate will be enforced nationwide and supersedes lack of a local lawful mandate.
The announcement comes a day after the NFL Players Association said 95 players had tested positive for COVID-19. The NFL and NFLPA earlier this week announced they had agreed on testing protocols as players expressed concerns ahead of the season.
Players and team personnel will be tested every day for the first two weeks of training camp, then every other day, as long as their team's positive test rate is and remains under 5%.
The NFL also agreed to cut preseason games. Additionally, several teams will play in an empty stadium per state guidelines on large gatherings, including the New York Giants and New York Jets, as the U.S. continues to see a surge in positive coronavirus cases.
Nearly 4 million have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the U.S., and more than 140,000 have died.
