New Orleans Auctioning Surplus Goods

Friday, 15 July 2011 09:30 PM EDT

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — In the market for an old police car that may or may not have been wrecked? How about a fire truck, some outdated computers, a generator or perhaps an ATM?

Cash-strapped New Orleans certainly hopes so.

The city has contracted with an online auction site that specializes in selling goods for municipal and state governments and police departments.

Some upscale items are up for bid, including a 2002 Bentley confiscated for unpaid taxes. It's valued at between $105,000 and $110,000.

Also offered are 843 former patrol cars, from 1996 to 2010 models. Many have no titles; they were lost after Hurricane Katrina.

Officials say the vehicles have not been flooded and titles will be replaced.

These and other surplus items will be auctioned, beginning next month, by PropertyRoom.com.
