New Jersey is imposing several restrictions in response to rising coronavirus case numbers, including a 10 p.m. curfew for indoor dining in restaurants and a ban on indoor organized sports, Politico reports.
“The last thing I want to do is shut our economy back down. Thankfully, we’re not at that point,” said Gov. Phil Murphy. “These are the measures we are taking now, and they do not preclude us from taking further action in other areas or placing other restricting on these in the near future.
“The good news is that a vaccine is on the horizon — we anticipate broad distribution by this spring. We have a plan ready should that time frame hold,” he added. “We have to snap back into reality. This virus hasn’t gone away, and it is posing its greatest threat to us in months.”
Among the measures include a curfew on restaurants, bars, lounges, clubs and casinos, all of which can no longer operate between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., and although restaurants can continue to provide outdoor dining, bar seating will be banned.
The governor also announced a ban on interstate sports that are played indoors for students in elementary through high school, but not on collegiate or professional sports.
New Jersey reported 2,075 coronavirus cases on Monday, with 11 deaths, which raises the total number of cases to 256,653 and the total number of deaths to 14,640 since March.
