Law enforcement in Florida is attempting to keep Zachary Cruz, Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz's younger brother, away from guns using a new law passed in the wake of the killings.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday filed to obtain a "red flag" risk protection order that could allow law enforcement to temporarily seize Cruz's firearms and restrict him from getting new ones.

"It will prohibit Cruz from possessing and acquiring firearms for a period of time to be determined by the court," the sheriff's office told CNN.

Cruz, 18, was arrested the day before for trespassing at the school where the shooting took place. His bond has been set at $500,000 and he is required to undergo a psychological evaluation. Cruz's lawyer argued that his client is being punished for his brother's crime, noting that the amount for misdemeanor trespassing is usually $25.

The judge also ordered that Cruz wear an ankle monitor, stay at least a mile away from the school, and to have no contact with the school's students, staff or his brother. The judge also ruled that deputies can search his home for guns.
