Mount Sinai Urology Chief: Prostate Tests Vital, Despite What Government Says

By    |   Friday, 29 March 2013 05:31 PM EDT

A renowned physician at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine says prostate tests are very effective — despite the federal government now discouraging men from getting them.

“The PSA [test], despite what the media and a lot of the people in the government U.S. task force [say] — it’s done a great job, Dr. David Samadi told Newsmax TV’s “The Steve Malzberg Show.’’

Story continues below.

Samadi, vice-chairman of the Department of Urology at Mount Sinai, said that despite screenings by urologists across the country, 28,000 people die every year from prostate cancer.
Last year, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommended that men not get routinely screened using the PSA test. It said there was little evidence it saves lives, and can cause harm from the treatment of non-life threatening tumors.

Samadi, who is also chief of Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Mount Sinai, disagrees.

“The good news is that besides PSA, we’re getting more and more genetic markers,’’ he said.

“We’re getting tests that will complement this test and it will be able to reduce the number of biopsies, reduce the number of complications, and find out which patient is going to have sped up their cancer and which one is not.’’

That means doctors can now “customize’’ prostate-cancer treatments to the individual patient.

“That information is power and it’s very unfortunate that the government is going after PSA, it’s going after mammograms. The next thing is going to be colonoscopy,’’ Samadi said.

“You need to have that information and then what you do with it is a discussion between you and your doctor and you oncologist to see whether you should move forward with biopsy or not. That’s big news.’’
