Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., told Newsmax TV on Tuesday that President Donald Trump "absolutely has the authority" to fire members of the Tennessee Valley Authority, a federally owned corporation, for hiring foreign workers.
Trump announced Tuesday he would relieve TVA chairman Skip Thompson and another member of the board after criticizing them for hiring foreign workers.
"The board members serve at the pleasure of the president; he absolutely has the authority to fire them," Rounds told Tuesday's "National Report." "I think he made the right decision in this particular case.
"This visa system, which actually works very well in most cases, was never designed to replace the American worker; it's designed only if you can't find American workers, and in this particular case you have good, hard-working Americans that were going to be displaced. That's a violation of everything that was found within the visa system, and the planning that was put into it in the first place.
"So, I'm very glad that the president has been very decisive in his message, and his actions."
