A Missouri lawmaker decided to take his state's motto to heart when he posted a video on Facebook of himself beheading a live chicken and dressing the bird while he discussed his newly introduced anti-abortion bill.
In the video, the Show Me State Republican Rep. Mike Moon wrings the chicken's neck as he discusses a special session called by Republican pro-life Gov. Eric Greitens, then explains that he is introducing a bill that goes even further, proposing the complete elimination of abortion in the state.
The video is not for the squeamish, and The Missouri Times provided a transcript for those who'd rather not watch:
"When the governor called for the second special session this year, I was right in the middle of my summer job. But like any good career politician, when I get the call (breaks to behead chicken), I'm going back to work. God gave us man dominion over life. He allows us to raise animals properly and care for them and then process them for food so we can sustain life. And that's what I'm doing here with this chicken. So we've been called back to this special session for the primary purpose of supporting life, protecting the unborn specifically. I think we need to get to the heart of the matter here (pulls out chicken's heart). So today, I'm filing a bill that will lead to the stopping of abortion in the state of Missouri and I hope you'll support it."
The governor called the special session for this week to repeal a St. Louis city ordinance that Greitens said could force "crisis pregnancy centers," which provide alternatives to abortion to women, to hire employees that support abortion.
"I'm pro-life," the Kansas City Star quoted Greiten, "and I believe that we need to defend life and promote a culture of life here in the state of Missouri."
But Moon wants to go even further by completely banning abortion in the state. In the video he makes no verbal comparison to the chicken he is slaughtering to the act of abortion, though that appears to be his intent.
Alison Dreith, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri, told The Missouri Times the video was "theatrics."
"Whatever Mike Moon does with a chicken in the privacy of his home is his own business," she said. "But we will not let him use the rights of women across Missouri as some kind of political prop. His call to ban abortion is disturbing and dangerous, no matter what he does with that chicken."
