Former White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney on Monday hit out at the "testing problems" the United States has encountered during the coronavirus pandemic while calling for a stimulus bill to deal with the outbreak.
Mulvaney wrote in an opinion piece for CNBC that Congress will likely pass another stimulus package at some point this year, but notes that “it may be too soon” to decide.
He adds that the coronavirus pandemic is "the root cause of our recession," and notes that "we still have a testing problem in this country," which he says "isn’t popular to talk about in some Republican circles."
Mulvaney recounts that his son had to wait days before getting test results back, and his daughter "was told she didn’t qualify" when she tried to get tested before seeing her grandparents.
"That is simply inexcusable at this point in the pandemic," he writes.
"We could also direct more money for research. Or more temporary hospital beds or therapeutics," Mulvaney continues. "If we are going to borrow hundreds of billions of dollars, let’s do it to treat the cause of our economic illness, not just the symptoms."
