Protests Fail to Derail George Will's Commencement Speech

Saturday, 13 December 2014 09:07 PM EST

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Protests have taken place at Michigan State University's commencement over comments graduation speaker George Will had previously made about sexual assault reporting at colleges.

The Lansing State Journal reports that Will didn't mention the protests during his speech to undergraduates Saturday. More than a dozen students stood as he spoke and turned their backs to him. Several others in the audience did the same or held up newspapers. About 200 demonstrators gathered outside.

In a June column, Will questioned statistics cited by President Barack Obama's administration and suggested federal authorities were making "victimhood a coveted status."

Will has said he was criticizing loss of due process for those accused of the serious crime.
