Michelle Obama Flies Under the Radar

By    |   Wednesday, 12 October 2011 10:17 AM EDT

As first lady, you would think that Michelle Obama would be recognized wherever she goes. But that’s not the case, Politico reports.

“It’s amazing how people don’t recognize you,” Obama said in an interview that appeared on NBC Wednesday. “They don’t expect to see me at Starbucks or at Chipotle.”

It happens at ice cream stores too. “Plenty of people have been in Baskin-Robbins a number of times; you know how the kids aren’t really paying attention. They’re looking right through you,” the first lady said. “They don’t know it’s me.”

Obama described a recent trip to Petco with the Obama’s dog Bo. A store clerk asked her Bo’s breed. “He didn’t recognize us, because he didn’t expect that we would be in Petco,” the first lady said.

To be sure, Obama can’t fly completely under the radar. She said she misses her regular outings to Target. Still, the first lady said she does it “more frequently than people realize” because such activity “helps to keep our kids’ lives normal.”

There is one thing the first family doesn’t have to worry about shopping for anymore, Obama revealed. That’s toilet paper, which comes courtesy of the White House. “You know, we pretty much have our supply stocked,” Obama said. “It’s one of the advantages. One of the perks.”
