Filmmaker Michael Moore slammed as "vicious" President Donald Trump's action Thursday to let states deny federal family planning money to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers.
Moore, a strident critic of Trump, publicly declared his support for Planned Parenthood by joining the organization the day after the president's inauguration.
Trump's private signing of the bill tossed out an Obama-era rule blocking states from defunding healthcare providers for political reasons — and passed the Senate in a tie-breaking vote cast by Vice President Mike Pence last month.
The rule mandated that state and local governments distribute federal Title X funding for services related to contraception, fertility, pregnancy care and cervical cancer screenings — and stipulated those services would get funding whether or not they also perform abortions.
"Four million people depend on the Title X family planning program, and by signing this bill, President Trump disregards their health and well-being," Dawn Laguens, Planned Parenthood's executive vice president, said of new law, The Hill reported.
