Most Americans, including an increasing number of Republicans, say they're wearing a face mask when they leave their homes to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, a poll conducted for the latest installment of the Axios-Ipsos Coronavirus Index shows.
According to the polling, released on Tuesday, almost two-thirds of Americans, or 62% of those surveyed, reported wearing a mask "all the time" when they go out. That number is up from 53% two weeks ago.
The largest jump was among Republicans, but there is still a large partisan divide:
- 45% of Republicans say they’re wearing a mask all the time, up from 35% at the end of June.
- 95% of Democrats say they wear a mask some or all of the time outside the house, compared with 74% of Republicans.
Axios reports that while the numbers may seem high to an everyday observer, the fact that people are claiming to wear masks all the time shows that this step is increasingly being seen as important. Further, many of those polled reported public reactions that occur concerning masks.
With people who said they "sometimes" wear a mask, 32% said they were denied entry into a business if they did not have a mask on.
- 21% said someone else has told them to put a mask on.
- 15% said they have told someone else to put on a mask.
The poll was conducted between July 10-13. Axios did not report a margin of error for the survey.
