Sen. Markey: Limit Natural Gas Exports Due to Recent Terror Threats

By    |   Monday, 12 August 2013 11:08 PM EDT

Freshman Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts warned President Obama that U.S. exports of natural gas should be limited in light of the recent terror threats in Yemen.

The reason, The Hill reports is that the United States shouldn't be dependent on countries like Yemen for natural gas, where one of al Qaeda's most thriving terrorist branches is actively trying to attack those resources.

The U.S. government closed down 19 diplomatic posts in the Middle East region last week when the Yemeni government reported that it had thwarted plans by the al Qaeda's branch in that country to attack local ports, oil, and gas facilities.

The concern Markey, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, raises is for the tankers that sit in the port in Everett, Massachusetts filled with liquefied natural gas from Yemen, and the potential threat they could pose to the U.S.

"In order to deliver gas to the Everett terminal, LNG tankers must travel through Boston Harbor and dock close to residential neighborhoods, an issue that has caused concern as the threat of terrorism has grown," Markey wrote.

Therefore, the Massachusetts Democrat argues, we need to maintain our natural gas reserves so that imports from Yemen don't rise.
